of these altars have been found in Asia Minor, now Turkey. One early source explains them by saying that because the gods came often to earth to visit men, the spots where they touched down were thought to be sacred, and various occult tricks were used to find these blessed sites by divination. One method was to place a ram in the area, and following the sheep around, they would wait for it to lie down, which would identify the spot to build the altar to an unknown god who had arrived at that spot.
